TOGHETHER LET’S EXAMINE OUR COMMUNICATION THROUGH OUR ART

Embracing the beauty of diversity and creativity!
Working alongside six incredibly talented deaf and hearing artists has been an absolute joy surrounded by the picturesque rolling green landscape of the Leystone Farms wool farm and vineyard.
Each artist shared their unique experiences of communication, in ways that were creative, thought-provoking and vivid.

TAPESTRY– THE ART OF THE CRAFT

During a nice day out in nature, the artists had the chance to experiment with tapestry.

PHONOCENTRISM DECONSTRUCTION

SPiLL hosted an exciting 1st Artist residency for Canadian Deaf artists, which was held in Gatineau, Quebec onMay 4-10, 2014: Phonocentrism: A Deconstruction of Art Practices.

The 5-day workshop was led by Jolanta Lapiak, an internationally presented Deaf media and literary artist, and will be held in International Sign Language (ISL). The workshop will guide the group in identifying and constructing new art practices from a Deaf centric perspective.
A manifesto was created and signed by 14 Artists.

The manifesto: A phonocentrism deconstructionist is a creative person who produces a work that questions, challenges and redefines phonocentric construction; seeks to recreate new formation through practice and process; and to induce social change.

BECOMING PUBLIC

SPiLL’s 2nd Art and Sign Language Residency (Saint Jean Port Joli, Québec):
SPiLL partnered with Artist Residency, Est-Nord-Est. Twenty-five artists attended from various disciplines (plus several volunteers and interpreters) from Québec, Ontario, and four Deaf Artists from USA and France. The main collaborative art installation “corde à linge” (clothesline) was installed in a public space, the local beach. In addition, since many Deaf artist are also mothers and fathers SPiLL hosted a creative-explorer camp for these children. All of these children can hear but have Deaf parents and are also fluent in sign language.

MAPPING CULTURAL SPACES

SPiLL 3rd residency- mapping
SPiLL hosted its third Arts Residency in Sign Language (ASL and LSQ) that provided master classes and space to empower Deaf and sign language artists to share knowledge, explore new techniques and forward both collective and individual art projects. The residency was a day residency running for 5 days, August 10 – 14th from 9 – 3pm.

The first Artist-in-Residence was Emmanuelle Jacques (Visual Artist in stamping/carving “Graveur”) who led the group of artists through a creative process of creating a symbolic language, through stamps, to mark their identity, place and culture on a local map of the region, Gatineau and Ottawa.

I SIGN / JE SIGNE

“I Sign!” Video Resource and Outreach Project (National, Montreal QC):
SPiLL in collaboration with Cinémathèque organized an arts networking event. Ten arts organizations, twenty Deaf artists and forty independent professional artists from various disciplines attended. SPiLL launched its “I Sign!” video resources that were researched and filmed to promote awareness of the needs of Deaf artists. A challenge has been that video’s for this project are archived, however, due to lack of organizational funding are no longer accessible to the public on the Internet.

Leading-the-Arts Mentorship Project Part 1 (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal):
Ten artists (5 Deaf and 5 not-deaf) were partnered matching their artistic discipline (video production, visual arts, art exhibiting, and literature). SPiLL hosted a meet and greet event where each artist discussed their art project and plans with a large team.

A GLIMPSE OF ME

In this multilingual devised theatre piece. We come together to explore our differences and similarities. Our joys and pains. Our triumphs and failures. Our life journeys as immigrant Canadians. We are Deaf but we have many identities. We grew up in Ghana, France and Iran. We learned French, French Sign Language, English, American Sign Language and Iranian Sign Language. When we moved to Canada everything changed. We will share a glimpse of what we have seen and who we have become.
